Most people take special care to protect their social security numbers for fear that it may be stolen and used to secure false identification or lines of credit. Until recently, that may have been enough. Now, because of publicly available data for people who have died called the Death Master File and some work by Carnegie Mellon University social security numbers can be predicted quite accurately. By knowing the state and date of someone’s birth, their social social security number can be predicted. Check out the full Wired article.
